His unique sexy voice, over driving rhythms and undeniable musicality,
has produced some of the biggest hits between 1964 and 1969. Although
he did not make any new recordings after he left Poland in 1969, Polskie
Nagrania, released his new album in 1996 with 22 songs on Muza label
with title:
Maciej Kossowski - Nie Mowie Zegnaj.
This eclectic CD contains a compilation of unforgettable and dynamic
recordings and is a showcase of Maciej Kossowski's multiple talents
as a vocalist, composer, trumpet player,
arranger and producr.
You will enjoy his first hit songs recorded in 1963 with group
Czerwono-Czarni (The Red - Blacks) on which he sings and plays
trumpet: Agatko, Dwudziestolatki, Nie zawsze
musi byc pochmurny dzien and Szkolny bal with Louis Prima's
kind of groove.
Aficionados
of Dixieland, will find selection which features Maciej Kossowski
with The Warsaw Stompers especially interesting because
it broke the rules laid down by the Polish establishment. In the forbidding
environment of socialist Poland Maciej sang in Polish language over
American Dixie music receiving extensive radio play.
The titles from this recordings are: Augustyna, Za co mnie kochasz, Nie mow o zazdrosci, To przez ciebie.
From
1967 Maciej Kossowski's recordings involve his other musical talents
like producing, composing and writing orchestrations. The first example
of this is his recording with the group Tajfuny, of
the song: Nie pozwol mi, to which he wrote music to
the text written by Andrzej Tylczynski.
In
years between 1968 and 1969 working with The Studio Rytm Orchestra
and other groups, Maciej Kossowski produced series of original songs
collaborating with various lyricists. Among these recordings his singing
and musicality shines in the song he composed and orchestrated: To
ty Mario (It's You Maria) in which the listener may discover
hidden deep sensitivities that echo love, loneliness and pain. Paradoxical
perhaps . . . if one takes under consideration his successful love
affairs.
From
the records released in 1970 after his departure from Poland we find
string of hits like: Wakacje z blondynka, Nie mowie zegnaj,
Domowe strachy, and Z Cyganami w swiat.
My favorite on this CD with great lyrics by Zbigniew Jerzyna
is Oczy ci zaslonie with Maciej's terrific vocals and
arrangement. Real R&B!
Still,
and perhaps most memorable is a hauntingly beautiful ballad: Nie
mowie zegnaj (I Don't Say Good-bye) arranged by the saxophone
player Janusz Muniak. The song has a powerful melody and pulsating
rhythm supplemented with "fuzzy" guitar solo played by Marek Blizinski.
The song caught attention of Kasia Sobczyk, Henryk Fabian and Jacek
Lech who released their renditions of the song on their records.
Kossowski a versatile performer, is equally at home singing ballads,
fast swing, Rock and R&B. He moves easily from shuffle beat in Dwudziestolatki
to romantic Nie pozwol mi. His overnight success with
Czerwono-Czarni, in August 1963 comes as no surprise. By October
of the same year the whole Poland felled under his spell.
Maciej Kossowski continues to put a stamp on Polish music, with his
songs and inspired recordings. He has become one of the most important
artists!
